Our Ethos

At Robert Sorby, we stay at the forefront of the latest manufacturing technologies, and we are proud that our tools are still largely hand-crafted using techniques that have remained virtually unchanged for 200 years.

By combining these traditional processes with modern CNC equipment, we blend 21st-century manufacturing methods with centuries-old crafting techniques. This unique blend of old and new is what makes Robert Sorby tools so sought after by the discerning craftsperson.

All our tools are made with the highest quality steel, which is hardened and tempered to our own specification. Polished flutes and hand-finished handles are typical of the quality and attention to detail that have always been the hallmarks of the Robert Sorby brand.

Vision for the future

Our traditions go hand in hand with our vision for the future.

We’re never content to rest on our laurels, and we’re always looking to develop new techniques and ways of working, with the sole purpose of enhancing our products and delivering a superior customer experience.

At Robert Sorby, we’re committed to making our working practices as environmentally friendly as possible, and we’re constantly seeking ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Our tools are designed to last a lifetime and are the very antithesis of ‘throwaway’ culture.

Commitment to sustainability

We send very little to landfill. All our wood and steel offcuts are sorted, reused, and recycled. All our packaging is recycled, and even the wood shavings from manufacturing our tool handles are sent to a local stable. Our new premises are energy-efficient, well-insulated and use low-energy lighting throughout. Wherever possible, we ‘buy local’, working with Sheffield-based suppliers and businesses, to reduce fuel consumption and support our local economy.

We also work hard to ensure the health and wellbeing of our staff, and we have invested in a state-of-the-art filtration system which extracts wood dust along with wet and dry matter from the working environment.

Keeping traditional
skills alive

It’s vital that we keep new talent coming into the industry, in order to keep the traditional skills involved in tool manufacture alive.

The skills gap in manufacturing is well-documented. Fewer young people than ever are choosing careers in manufacturing, while experienced older workers are preparing to retire. At Robert Sorby, we’re focused on developing the skills of local young people and attracting new talent into the sector. We offer a comprehensive training programme and take on new apprentices every year. We also work with local organisations to promote manufacturing careers in schools.
